Red Rising is a gripping tale of revolution, betrayal, and, apparently, emotional damage speedrunning. Watch as the protagonist dedicates his entire existence to avenging his girl, only for the series to repeatedly remind you that happiness is temporary and relationships exist primarily to maximize psychological suffering. If you've ever thought, "This space opera needs more humiliation and romantic misery," then congratulations, you've found your book. Beneath the explosions, political intrigue, and power struggles lies an unspoken theme: no matter how unstoppable the hero becomes, the universe will always find a way to make his personal life catastrophically awkward. Expect enough relationship drama to make you question whether conquering planets is actually easier than maintaining a healthy relationship. Recommended for: people who enjoy emotional punishment. Not recommended for: anyone who wanted an uncomplicated power fantasy and didn't sign up for feeling secondhand embarrassment every few hundred pages.
